We’re rounding up the year this week by looking at our favourite tracks (any genre, any label).
Every day this week, one member of the Toolroom team will count down their top 10 of 2013 and let you in on their favourite Toolroom moment.
Our first countdown of the week comes from our Head of Music, George Ankrett:
TOP 10 OF 2013
1. Moderat – II – Monkeytown Records
An instant highlight of 2013. ‘Gita's simple yet beautiful chords really floors me every time. Electronic music brimming with soul.
2. Earl Sweatshirt – Doris – Tan Cressida
A stand out Hip Hop album for me. Dark, murky lyrics sit effortlessly over crisp productions. Big!
3. Dusky – Careless EP – Aus
With tracks like 'Calling Me’ and ‘What I Never Knew’ still firmly locked in as favourites for the year, this EP really encapsulates their expert production in a stunning 4 track EP. Another cracking year for Aus too.
4. Boards Of Canada – Tomorrow's Harvest – Warp Records
Often bleak, apocalyptic, like a score from an 80’s Romero zombie flick, but with textures and layers that are skilfully put together. Not as instant as previous albums, but definitely a highlight of 2013.
5. Midland – Archive01 / Realtime – Graded
Another exceptional year for Midland, this gut wrenchingly good original stands out for me. Dark yet dripping in funk.
6. Boys Noize – Go Hard EP
Rave was back in 2013! Chase & Status’ ‘Count On Me’ touched on pure feel good moments. ‘Go Hard’ on the other hand, went… erm… harder!
7. Wilkinson – Lazers Not Included – Ram Records
Big big tunes… From start to finish. ‘Take You Higher’ is a personal favourite.
8. Bonobo – The North Borders – Ninja Tune
The perfect album to get lost in.
9. Hot Since 82 – Little Black Book – Moda Black
An unmistakable year of standout productions and remixes all wrapped up in one convenient bundle.
10. Steve Silk Hurley – Jack Your Body (Doorly Club Rub) - Toolroom
Was great to release such a seminal record in 2013, with one of my favourite producers on remix duties.
Special mention: Special Request – Soul Music - Houndstooth
Paul Woolford’s Jungle Techno infused homage on Fabric’s excellent Houndstooth…. Watch ya bassbins I’m telling ya...
Toolroom Highlight Of 2013
My Toolroom highlight of 2013 was definitely the ‘Ten’ exhibition held at Ministry Of Sound, where we could look over some of the labels highlights… Looked really good.
